C.R. England Review by Nathan Plyler, October 27, 2010
While it has been awhile since I went to C R England’s school and leased a truck from them, some of the videos I have seen on YouTube recently about England have motivated me to write a review. I chose the Salt Lake school even though I live in Michigan and Burns Harbor was much closer to my home, but SL’s program was quicker. I was itching to start my career. I admit, I had NO clue what it would be like out there and that is the first mistake that was made. I would LOVE to see England have some class time devoted to prepare you for the mental stresses out there – the biggest one is being gone from your family. They need to let the student know right up front that you will probably not make it home for 3 to 4 months but once that initial training period is over and you get your truck, you can get home more often if you like. Another problem I had, small and trivial, but still an irritant was, my DM introduced himself by saying “I am not your mama and I am not your babysitter”. I agree, but it would have been more helpful starting out by saying something like “I realize that some of you might be scared or nervous, but I have been out there and I will help you as much as I can, but remember 2 things 1) I am responsible for 75 trucks so please remember that when you need something and 2) You are the one responsible for getting the job done. Again, I will help you when I can, but I can’t make you do your job”. Another stupid, small thing: In the paperwork you fill out, they ask you if you would like a call made to your family at home welcoming them to the England family. I said yes: they never made the call. Last complaint I have has to do with the lease truck. You are not given much help in choosing a truck, but it would be a HUGE help if they could make a mechanic available to each lease operator for 15 minutes or 1/2 an hour to go over your truck and service records/file with you once you have made your selection. I had a couple of problems with my truck once I got it out on the road after a couple of weeks, but I can’t blame England for that. The bottom line here is that I didn’t feel like I got the support that I needed from England, but ultimately my failure to succeed at England was my own fault, not England’s. I regret leaving England, and woould go back if given the opportunity now that I have a better grip on what life is really like on the road, but they make it clear to you that if you walk away from the lease, you will never work for England again. Bottom line here is this – England is not perfect, but nobody is. You just need to be mentally prepared for the challenges you could face out there, and I think England could do a better job preparing new drivers with minimal investment and give a little more support to their lease operators. England will give you the tools to succeed, but you need to make sure you are prepared for the challenges of being on the road.

The training they offered is excellent but the dispatcher richard is racist. He has preferrence with certain drivers the rest are screw. The supervisor don’t do anything to solve the drivers problems. The almost force you to lease, they don’t give u enough mileage and you ended owing them money. They don’t offered health insurance or anyother benefit. They don’t let you go home and if you request time in advance the dispatcher wipeout your request. Overall this company is not only bad is unfair with their drivers. I don’t recommended to any reasonable person.

Their trainers like to take out 2 trainees at the same time, however, the trainer will tell you to mark “sleeper” time when you are sleeping in the passenger seat. That way the trainer gets more driving out of you. Rather, legally, the time should be marked “on-duty” not driving, according to my attorney.

I went through there cdl mill and went to work for them last year in may and quit in july. i was gone from my family the hole time i left for school on may 7 05 and never got home til july 23 05. the school is ok i guess but you better no your stuff before you go. you’ll get donuts for breakfast and a cup of noddles for lunch. when i was in salt lake city they were bussin in people like no tommorrow. for every driver quit there was 10 recuits to take his\her place. i got very lucky my trainer was the best shortly after i left he moved to a better place also. all england wants to do is make a newbie get into there lease program from what i understood when i was there jan1 there were not gonna be anymore co. drivers hired if you want a job with them you have to go lease op. there lease program is a joke. they take almost all your money.
